The Beginning

I guess I'm in the minority in my family. As a democrat that cares for my fellow man I can't stand by as republicans try to put someone in the office to continue the war mongering legacy that has been the Bush White House. Let's take a look at the past 28 years.

Reagan - War Criminal
GHW Bush - War Criminal
Clinton - Womanizer (but hey he balanced the budget!)
GW Bush - War Criminal

Before 2000
McCain = Maverick

After 2000
McCain = Bush

But here's some thoughts from the elite right (If McCain was actually using Mark's points they might get somewhere - but he's not McCain/Palin's focusing on the last paragraph without the skill of Atwater/Rove)

A Nice Letter from Nancy P

Dear Ted,

After eight years of disastrous policies of the Bush Administration, we need a New Direction for America. It's time for a new type of President and it's time for a new type of politics. It's time for Barack Obama.
Barack Obama shows us a new way forward. He has a real plan for protecting and promoting working families, reforming health care and getting our economy back on track. But more than that, he has called us to rise above to a better type of politics that reaffirms our responsibility to ourselves and to others.
Here in California, please join me in opposing Propositions 4 and 8. Proposition 4 is an ill-conceived measure that would put the health of our teens in danger. Proposition 8 would write discrimination into our State Constitution and take away the existing rights of same sex couples to marry. Both of these propositions are opposed by Barack Obama as they are rooted in the old politics of division, and they must be defeated.
I urge you to vote Democratic from the top of the ticket on down, because an Obama Administration will need Democratic allies at all levels of government to enact the changes we need. Whether it's a vote for Congressional candidates to re-elect Jerry McNerney and elect Charlie Brown and our strong challengers; a vote for State Assembly candidates like Joan Buchanan, Marty Block, Manuel Perez, or State Senate candidate Hannah-Beth Jackson; or a vote for a Democratic supervisor or city council member; a vote for a Democrat is a vote for Team Obama.

John McCain represents four more years of the Bush Administration. In nominating John McCain, the Republican Party shows they have no new ideas to address the challenges that we face as a nation.
That is why, rather than running on the issues, we have seen little more from John McCain and the Republican Party than attacks and distortions.
Team Obama offers real change and a new way forward.
Onward to Victory!

Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Scratching my head until I drew blood

Thank you for trying to explain this but with all due respect this is a very typical McCain response. Change the issue.

The original email that Tita sent me only mentioned taxes, therefore, the scope of my defense was limited to taxes and the current economic crises. (my emotional side brought up the smear campaigning that has worked for the republicans since Reagan)

I too thought Ron Paul was an interesting candidate but he's not here now. Unions, school vouchers - correct me if I'm wrong but I don't thing any of my cousins went to public schools so who knows about that? Well, I guess Stephanie does but it is a smaller issue. Sorry.

Unions and the auto industry (and now the rest of the U.S. industry) are a victim of the status quo that is America's deregulated government.

Income - we work very hard and combined we don't make anything close to $250K. Do all your children make more then $250K? So trickle down Reaganomic's doesn't work. And what you call economic growth is actually an intricate house of cards that syphoned money back to the wealthy (apologies to the wealthy on this email but I think you'll live with a little more taxes).

When the base is strong and successful the overall health of the economy grows naturally. If you want to talk about the auto industry it has suffered because the population at large can't afford to buy a car!

Taxes - your model of an economy where growth matched inflation is a boogie man - camp fire tale that has never happened. You speak of very specific things and you say it is documented please offer me links.

Education of a candidate - It is true that I dropped out of college and went back later (when I went back I graduated Cum Laude). But I'm not running to be the leader of the free world. George Bush might have gone to Yale
(undergrad) and Harvard (mba) but I don't consider him to be an intelligent man. Often times intelligence and wealth leads smart and rich people to ignorance. Ignorance eats intelligence like cancer. I'm more interested in Obama's 10+ years as a professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School.

"Old Boys Network" - McCain has been inside the beltway since 1982 please view this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6u0sevdGsog

It's time for an outsider with thoughtful ideas.

Filibuster Proof Majority - For you republicans there's nothing more damning than a mandate in our federal government. Talk about giving the dems enough rope to hang themselves with - this is it.

Vote - Tita says that "Your vote is equal to anyone s vote" since you brought it up I'm opposed to the electoral college and it's power to push everyone to the margins - especially in a dominant red or blue state. Do republicans bother voting in DC? Unfortunately, our Vote does not elect the next President - that luxury goes to the members of the electoral college and the supreme court. I think we need to get in and destroy the electoral college from the inside out.

How many more people would vote if their vote actually counted? We may never know.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_college

The system was established by rich, white, land/slave owners - why do we still have it?

Ted

My Cryptic Reply?

DearTed,
I read your reply to the e-mail I forwarded to you. I am glad that you are involved in this election.
I am surprised that with your personal educational history,of dropping out of college and trying to find yourself when you were 18(some 18 year olds do not know what they want to do for the rest of their lives) then going back to college and applying yourself ,that you are minimizing Gov. Palins and Sen . Mc Cains educational background. Are you one of those people who think graduates of Yale and Harvard are better than people who graduated from Ohio State or Penn State?

The important thing is to VOTE because this is the right that many young people have taken for granted. Your vote is equal to anyone s vote no matter what their religion or beliefs may be.

Tita

A School View

just a comment on school vouchers... They may have the best of intentions, but they are a band-aid on a gaping wound. Vouchers have individual student concerns in consideration but these vouchers make it all to easy for government to ignore the major problems like under paid teachers, lacking facilities, over populated classrooms and implementation of too many experimental programs with no follow through. Having worked in the DC public school system and various after school programs around DC I recognize that there are more problems than answers right now. The amount of injustice and stress that these kids go through on a daily basis outside of school seems enough but add on the crap they have to deal with in and underfunded yoyo of a school, and it's enough to break your heart.

Ring the Red Bell Loudly

Which failed after 7 months in the state of Hawaii, because the same principles that Senator Obama is saying were used in Hawaii. Except that the public decided they did not want to pay for their health care and jumped onto the state’s plan, bankrupting the system in only those 7 months!

William Bradford tried the Socialism thing and equality of outcome in the Plymouth colony, but it failed when the same thing happened; everyone wanted somebody else to do the work.

If you want to spread the wealth, let me give you my address, and you can send your check to me!

Socialism has failed every time it has been tried, and now we are on the cusp of seeing it mandated in the greatest country the world has ever seen. Does the US have problems, sure. But the founding fathers protested taxes by throwing tea into Boston Harbor, and now you are patriotic for wanting to pay more?

If you want to help those less fortunate, start a foundation and ask for money. If you see someone who is hungry, don’t give a fish, but be compassionate enough to teach him to fish. One fish lasts a day, but teaching him to fish, lasts a lifetime!

Sent a similar message to my aunt, and had to back up everything with articles, so this is not hyperbole and antipathy.

Good luck in the movies, and God Speed!

Is Ohio the MidWest?

Hi Ted, from the great Midwest.

Why is secret ballot so important that Sec of State Jennifer Brunner allows same day registration and voting without making sure that the 88 counties all have verification that those votes are only counting once (or Secret Ballot) and union voters are subject to the ray of sunlight which makes all things transparent and even (Public Ballot)? Why the difference?

The American autoworker by far build the best vehicles in the country, but they are primarily building imports, while the Big 3 (soon to be the Big 2) have sent most of their jobs overseas for cost-savings due to locked contracts with union representation. Import manufacturers are union-free shops, and perform better than Big 3 shops that are closing. Why the difference?

Increasing Capital Gains taxes will have the direct opposite of their intention. The tax code penalizes people for putting money in savings accounts and CD’s, because it is taxed at a higher rate than spending that money, real income on a 1099 v. Capital gains at 15%. It is no wonder that the savings rate per capita is a negative number. I guess to make it fair, the Capital Gains should be raised. And yet higher taxes are supposedly going to help the economy (by taxing the people that create jobs more) but to stimulate the economy we give tax rebates back to the consumer. Higher taxes are good, but not when we need to jumpstart an economy when we give them back. Why the difference?

Speaking of the economy, you brought up the S&L crisis with the mention of the Keating 5, but yet Obama’s financial advisors killed Bush legislation to prevent the housing crisis (Kerry, Dodd, Franks, Pelosi, Reid) when Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Ginnie Mae were showing signs of problems. Why the difference?

Let’s talk about the economy in regards to the 2008 bailouts set forth by the Democratic Congress, elected on a lower fuel price mandate in 2006 (of which nothing was done with that mandate as fuel rose to unseen prices over the 2 years, and only now have come down). In 2008, the federal government printed $1 Trillion dollars to bailout financial companies for making record profits for 5-15 years, but neglecting their fiduciary responsibilities to their shareholders. The relationship between Risk and Reward does not mean that we need to weaken the dollar to keep the world economy afloat. Free markets allow people to make those decisions, but now we are going to bail out these risk-takers with an unheard of program; the Department of the Treasury is going to use his/her discretion to pay whomever he/she wants. No Congressional oversight, No Executive oversight, no checks and balances. People were praising the current programs and wanted to do nothing in 2004-06, and reaped the rewards of running from our current positions ion the Dow to the highest the Dow had ever been in October 2007, but since then we have tumbled. Why is there so much pressure to do something now. Why the difference of now vs. 2004-06?

If it was the horrible Republicans and their policies for such high fuel prices, as evidenced by the 2006 mandate, then why are the Republicans not getting credit now for the drop in the price of a barrel of oil, and the resulting drop from +$4/gallon to -$2/gallon for gas? Why the difference?

Education is a huge problem here in Ohio, and yet the funding of that problem is only getting bigger. The city of Hilliard, Ohio is paying out more than 80% of its education budget in payroll. No wonder our schools are failing. The Columbus metropolitan area has more than 15 districts in it. That’s more than 15 administrations that need to be paid, instead of using such common sense as Louisville, KY, which consolidated the districts into 1. Where do those extra dollars go? To the students. Why throw more money into the system, when the results do not show it helps? More government money is not the answer, especially when either property or income taxes go up to support the raises. Again, if the levies won’t pass because of a lack of results, then we’ll take the money, but give a nominal tax rebate to jumpstart the consumer-based economy. How do you pay for an army of teacher’s when we should be discussing full-year schooling instead? Why the difference?

We talk a lot about what each tax plan will do for everyone. What one fails to understand that, regardless of which plan goes into effect, it will be offset by the roll-back of the Bush tax-cuts which helped us out of the recession brought on by the attack on our soil by terrorists. Let’s look at the tax plan: first, where do we put this new tax plan into effect when Joe Biden admitted in Florida last weekend that the level of income not affected dropped from $250,000 to $150,000? However, the economy is not doing well, and the federal reserve is printing its way out of these problems, so we can’t put the tax plan into effect (because of the concern of sending a new rebate out as a stimulus, why the difference?), but the $1 Trillion printed in 2008 alone, coupled with the roll-back of the Bush tax cuts, work against one another (more liquidity added to the market, but taken away in the form of higher taxes). Let’s now assume that Senator Biden made a mistake when he said that the rates would be based on $150,000 and not the plank-based $250,000. We are going to penalize small-business owners with higher taxes, healthcare unfunded mandates (oh, sorry, there’s a one-time $3,000 credit for creating a job to pay the added expense), and more government regulation. Why would I as a business owner create a job that costs me more in training and oversight for a one-time $3,000 benefit? Wouldn’t it make sense to lower taxes on those who create jobs and use greed to the government’s favor? Isn’t 40% of $250,000 less than 25% of $250,000, 5 more jobs at $30,000 with the income taxes they provide (at 20%), plus the buying power of their incomes and the sales taxes they represent (at 7%, because nobody saves, but if they did, we’d tax that gain at regular income), and the sales taxes of major purchases and travel by the business owners? Which creates more Equality of Opportunity? New jobs with new experiences, and new innovations, or more government programs strangling everyone’s future?

Now let’s look at Social Security. The Toledo, Ohio democratic representative talked about rolling back 401k’s to their August pre-slide amounts and TAKING them. The government would actually seize that money and put it into a 3% growth account plus the cost of inflation as a guaranteed retirement. We all know that Social Security is bankrupt, but this is how the Dems look to solve the problem, throw more money at the problem! This is what we have to look forward to with a filibuster-proof majority in both houses, and the most-liberal president in history.

If you vote for change, then remember that Congressional confidence levels are even lower than those of the Executive. The problem is that people only look at the White House, but congressional actions and inactions are the cause of what is happening in this country right now. I encourage you to read the article in the October Imprimis about Iran. It talks about a society that we want to have relations with, but they have said for 30 years that they are at war with the United States.

What redeeming qualities does Senator Obama have? Kicking off his political career in the living room of an admitted terrorist? His circle of advisors who blocked the change needed to stem the causes of the current economic problems we face? His voting record, both in the Illinois Senate and in Washington of “present” more than taking a stance one way or the other? His teaching fringe groups how to skirt law in registering new voters? His lack of any accomplishment in government (oh, sorry, he did sponsor the elemental mercury bill that sailed through Congress)?

Notice, this is from the Midwest, and nothing but issues. No race, no religion, but issues.

Please reconsider your vote for Obama, as we headed to a country that would more resemble the regimes that the illegal aliens are fleeing to come here!

Mark

Good Morning? This is a familial Nightmare!

Good Morning Ted,

I got your email and would like to share my own views. While earlier in the game I was for Ron Paul as were 16% of Pennsylvania Republicans. I am now going to vote for John McCain as the lesser of evils. I would certainly not vote for Obama for the following reasons.

Obama claims he is for change. That sounds good. One thing he wants to change is the way unions can get representation in a company. Under his plan the workers would lose their right to a secret ballot when voting whether they want union representation. Can't you see how this can result in intimidation and reprisals. If the union gets in they will know who their friends are. Do you think that those who voted against the union will now be treated equally to those who voted for it? Obama is in the pocket of the unions. This certainly is not change. The Democrats have always worked hard to repay their union donors.

Union representation in private sector companies has been falling since the 1950s. If you think unions are good for people just look at the auto industry and Michigan and Ohio. This industry is depressed in the heavily unionized northern states. The burden placed on auto companies by the unions has given them a tremendous disadvantage to non-union manufacturers. Look how the auto industry is growing and producing jobs in the southern states. Hundai has built the world's most automated car factory in one of our southern states. Other foreign car manufacturers have set up plants in non-union states as well.

The only growth in union membership in the past 50 years has been in the public sector. JFK first gave public employees the right to unionize. This was his payback for their generosity to his campaign. Obama is certainly not changing this traditional stance.

Obama wants to increase capital gains taxes. This, he claims, will increase government revenues to pay for some of his other plans. This is a false premise and he knows it. In the past every time the capital gains tax rate has been increased the government has taken in less revenue. Each time the capital gains tax has been lowered it has resulted in greater tax revenues being received. This is well documented.

Now let's step back a minute and look at capital gains. In many cases a significant portion of capital gains are illusionary. Say you buy an asset and it doubles in value over ten years. However in that same period the purchasing power of your dollar fell to half of its previous value. In reality you have no capital gain. The purchasing power from the sale of your asset has not changed. However, the government chooses not to see things this way. They will tax you on what can only be described as an illusionary gain. They change your investment from breaking even in purchasing power to a loss. Saying this in another way the government rewards itself for inflating the currency. Since inflation is chronic a part of every capital gain is illusionary. Therefore the tax rate on the actual realized gain is higher than stated. A better way to deal with capital gains would be to index the value to remove the effect of inflation.

Their is no change to Democrats raising capital gains tax rates. It is part of the class envy game they enjoy playing. Unfortunately many voters do not realize that they pay capital gains through their IRAs, their 401Ks, and mutual funds. Higher taxes result in lower investment performance. In Ireland capital gains taxes were sharply reduced just before their economic boom which propelled them to become the fastest growing nation in the European Union.

Now let's look at education. Many people from both parties agree that American schools are not doing well by international standards. This is nothing new. There have been many ideas and solutions offered to rectify this situation. One which has received some acceptance and success is the idea of giving vouchers to parents so they can choose which schools their children will attend. By giving parents a choice the public schools have competition and an incentive to improve. Voucher programs have been successful in a number of areas. Obama opposes all voucher plans. Why? Because the teachers unions do not like them. They prefer to maintain the status quo where it is nearly impossible to fire incompetent teachers or to trim the large number of "administrators" (which often exceeds the number of teachers in a school district).

It is easy for Obama to play politics with this topic since it only concerns other people's children. His daughters are in private schools.

Obama pledged to accept public funding for his campaign as every candidate from both party has since the Watergate era. Later he decided to break his pledge when he decided it would benefit him to do so. Aren't you put off at least a little bit by a man who does not keep his word? I am.

Ted, you seem to like the idea that we may soon have a government where the Democrats hold both the White House and the Congress with a veto-proof majority. I see this as a very frightening possibility. Should this happen They would be able to put in place many of their "wealth distribution" plans and programs. We run the risk of having the majority of citizens getting entitlements which the country cannot afford to pay in the long run. These programs could be permanent as voters would not vote to cut of their own "entitlements". Then what happens? Look at the European countries which have flirted with socialism. See how they are trying to cut back on programs they can no longer afford. Why can't we learn from their example. Is it really necessary to go down the same road?

In closing let me add that one thing I like about both McCain and Palin is that neither went to Yale or Harvard. I have long felt that for far too long these two institutions and their old boys network have had much to much power in government. Don't your Californian schools ever produce someone fit for the political arena? How about UCLA? Why not someone from Rice in Texas? The ivy league elite have had too much influence in government in my rarely-humble opinion. Have they really done such a great job? Some of our best presidents have not gone to Harvard or Yale. Truman and Reagan come to mind.

I still have high hopes that Billy will be our first black president!

Tito
I'm so sorry that "Paul" and Robert Jenkins have fallen for this Fox News, CNBC propaganda.

Robert - What is your documentation? As I seem to recall Wachovia has bigger things to worry about than the election. Neither candidate voted against the massive bailout so "Walk-all -over-you" is safe under it's new parent (I'm pulling for Wells Fargo - I have a friend in Charlotte and it's a better deal for everyone except CitiBank). Mark was my best man and he probably audit's your office regularly. We don't always see eye-to-eye on politics but he has enough respect for me not to use tax lies to scare me into voting for McCain. But then again I live in California and we see what Republicans (even a moderate one like Arnie) can do to a state. We're so "Blue" over here McCain hasn't even looked past Nevada. Where does Arnie go to stump for McCain? Ohio. Because maybe Ohio is far enough away that Arnie's still a action movie celebrity and not so much of a political pariah.

Here's some "straight talk" not cut and massaged but left with it's full documentation:
http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/taxes/Tax_Plan_Facts_FINAL.pdf

And here's the tax calculator:

And just for giggles I like to check out this site:
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/

The majority of Americans will benefit from Obama in the White House and a Senate Majority of 60+. Who on this email is making over $250K a year? If you said yes I salute you and hope that you understand what it takes for rest of us (the majority) to live - hand to mouth, paycheck to paycheck and in fear of getting ill as our current healthcare system is sicker then Lee Atwater on his deathbed.

I only wish we could keep the close-minded, closeted racists from benefiting from Obama's presidency. I'm sure Obama with his Ghandi-JFK-FDR-ness would say, "That's not nice, Ted! Let's turn the other cheek, Ted!" but I just want to put it out there.

Please don't let these tax lies cover the real issue. Republicans and Wall Street needs a puppet in the White House now more then ever. But you have to ask why are so many Big Time Republicans are jumping from the McCain ship? The party's over and McCain's puppetmasters didn't do all their vetting so McCain (who was a Maverick, war veteran and anti-establishment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6u0sevdGsog ) now looks like the thinnest piece of paper in a hurricane of crises. Some say that General Powell's endorsement was racially based - I believe it is divinely based. Powell saw god and needed to repent for his involvement in the Iraqi War.

So now more then every we, the people - the majority - and the world need a strong, smart confident leader that speaks eloquently and thinks and consults before he speaks and acts.

Natasha - are you still living in the great state of Virginia (the real Virginia)? If so I hope I see your vote on Nov 4th.

Uncle Lewin & Tita Lydia - how's PA doing with it's lavish attention from McCain and Obama?

Everybody be sure to vote - for democrats it's on Nov 4th and Republicans are on Nov 5th (oh, sorry that's a republican tactic - you can thank Atwater/Rove for the scum that Republican call "strategy").

Seriously, VOTE

If you're planning on retiring someday (and I know we all are) – you need to read this! With Obama as president, I'll probably have to work until I'm dead (and that won't come a moment too soon). If you think this is just political mud-slinging, look who wrote it – a VP at Wachovia.
This will either change your vote – or change the day you plan to retire – it's your choice!

SO THIS IS THE CHANGE HE IS TALKING ABOUT !!

Proposed changes in taxes after 2008 General election:
CAPITAL GAINS TAX
MCCAIN OBAMA
0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples) McCain does not propose any change in existing home sales income tax. 28% on profit from ALL home sales

How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.

DIVIDEND TAX
MCCAIN OBAMA
15% (no change) 39.6%

How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama become president. The experts predict that 'higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.

INCOME TAX
MCCAIN (no changes) OBAMA (reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts)
Single making 30K - tax $4,500
Single making 50K - tax $12,500
Single making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 60K- tax $9,000
Married making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 125K - tax $31,250 Single making 30K - tax $8,400
Single making 50K - tax $14,000
Single making 75K - tax $23,250
Married making 60K - tax $16,800
Married making 75K - tax $21,000
Married making 125K - tax $38,750

Under Obama your taxes will more than double! How does this affect you? No explanation needed. This is pretty straight forward.

INHERITANCE TAX
MCCAIN OBAMA
0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax) Restore the inheritance tax

How does this affect you? Many families have lost businesses, farms and ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will not only lose them to these taxes.

NEW TAXES BEING PROPOSED BY OBAMA
* New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than 2400 square feet (CHECK THIS ONE OUT !!)
* New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already)
* New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity)
* New taxes on retirement accounts and last but not least....
* New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!!
